Tuesday the 3rd Cat Fact
Its Tuesday! Back to work after the holidays... Time for today's CAT FACT!!
Did you know?
Cats have fantastic night vision and can see at only one-sixth the light level required for human vision!
The reasons for this are many! And all amazing! I'll highlight some fun ones below in the meantime. We will absolutely HAVE to have more CAT FACTS in the future about all the different things that give all the house kitties their amazing night vision abilities!
Some of the reasons that Cats can see so well in the dark are:
- tapetum lucidum - latin for "Bright Tapistry" . You know when you give a cat a staredown, sometimes you will see that shimmery glaze over their fancy eyeballs? This is the tapetum lucidum. It works by basically reinforcing the light that is already there. It focuses on green/blue (like human night vision goggles from the movies) so that it can stand a chance, then it reflects the light multiple times giving the cat a 44% brighter image of what is there compared to a human. As humans, we only get to see the light once, and we see all the colours so its diluted.
- The domestic cat has slit pupils, which allow it to focus bright light. At low light, a cat's pupils expand to cover most of the exposed surface of its eyes
